AI SEO Audit Checklist: Is Your Website Ready for AI Search?

A full AI SEO audit checklist covering crawling, technical foundations, entity clarity, schema, and AI search readiness.

An AI SEO audit checks everything a standard technical SEO audit does — indexation, crawlability, on-page fundamentals — plus a newer layer specific to AI search: entity clarity, structured data, answer-first content structure, and citation-worthiness. The full checklist below is organised by section.

Why a standard SEO audit no longer covers the full picture

For years, an SEO audit meant checking rankings, backlinks, and technical health, and that was a reasonably complete picture of what determined search visibility. That's no longer true. A site can be technically sound and rank respectably in traditional results while being almost entirely invisible in AI-generated answers, simply because it wasn't built with the additional signals AI platforms weigh — clear entity information, answer-first structure, and content that reads as citable rather than merely rankable. Running only the old checklist today means auditing for half the picture.

Indexation and crawling

Start with the basics that determine whether anything else on this list even matters: confirm your priority pages are indexed in Google Search Console, check robots.txt isn't accidentally blocking important content or AI crawlers, verify your XML sitemap is current and submitted, and check for orphaned pages with no internal links pointing to them.

Technical foundations

Confirm core web vitals are within acceptable ranges, check that content renders properly for crawlers (not hidden behind client-side JavaScript that doesn't render server-side), verify mobile usability, and check for broken links, redirect chains, and duplicate content issues.

Search intent coverage

For each priority keyword, check whether your content actually matches the dominant intent behind it — informational, commercial, or transactional — by comparing your page against what's currently ranking and being surfaced in AI answers for the same query.

Entity clarity

Confirm your business name, description, and core details are consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and relevant directories. Check that your "About" or team pages clearly establish who you are and what expertise backs your content — this feeds directly into how confidently AI systems attribute and trust your content.

Why entity consistency matters more than it seems

It's easy to underestimate how much a small inconsistency — a slightly different business name on one directory, an outdated address on another — can undermine entity clarity in aggregate across the web. AI systems build confidence in a source partly by cross-referencing consistent signals across multiple locations; a business whose details are scattered and inconsistent effectively looks less trustworthy to these systems than one whose information lines up cleanly everywhere it appears. Auditing this properly means checking beyond your own website to the handful of external platforms where your business is listed.

Expertise and trust

Review whether your content includes genuine author attribution, credentials, and real examples rather than generic, unattributed claims. Check for outdated statistics or advice that could undermine trust if an AI system cross-references your content against more current sources.

Structured content

Audit your top pages for answer-first structure: does each section answer its heading directly in the opening sentence, before adding supporting detail? Check that headings are descriptive and mirror how people actually phrase questions, and that comparisons or processes use tables and numbered lists rather than dense paragraphs.

Internal linking

Map whether your content clusters around clear pillar topics with strong internal linking between related pieces, or whether content sits in isolation. Fix orphaned or under-linked pages, and ensure your most commercially important pages receive strong internal link equity.

Schema

Check for Organization, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, and (where relevant) HowTo or Product schema across your key pages. Validate implementation using a structured data testing tool, since broken schema is often worse than none at all.

Citation-worthiness

Ask honestly: if an AI model were choosing between your page and a competitor's on this topic, which would it cite, and why? Check for genuine depth, specific facts and figures, and content that goes meaningfully beyond a surface-level overview.

AI search visibility

Manually run your priority queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google (checking for AI Overviews) and log whether you're mentioned, cited, or represented accurately. This is the most direct, if labour-intensive, way to see where you currently stand — see our guide on AI search optimisation for the full framework behind this.

How to prioritise what the audit turns up

A full audit typically surfaces more issues than can reasonably be fixed at once, so prioritisation matters. We generally recommend fixing indexation and crawling issues first, since nothing else on this list matters if priority pages aren't reliably indexed. From there, entity consistency and schema tend to offer a strong return relative to the effort involved, since they're largely one-time fixes rather than ongoing content work. Content restructuring for answer-first clarity and building out genuine topical depth are typically the longer-term, higher-effort items, best tackled systematically over several months rather than all at once.

A worked example of an audit finding

On a recent audit for a services business, we found the site ranked reasonably well organically for its core service terms but was essentially absent from AI-generated answers to the same questions. The underlying cause turned out to be structural: most content opened with several paragraphs of scene-setting before answering the actual question, which meant an AI system synthesising a quick answer had nothing extractable near the top of the page to work with. Restructuring the highest-priority pages to answer directly within the first sentence or two of each section, without cutting any of the underlying depth, was enough to start seeing citations appear within a couple of months.

How often to repeat the audit

AI platforms and their selection criteria are still evolving quickly, which means a checklist like this one isn't a one-time exercise. We recommend a full audit at least twice a year, with a lighter monthly check specifically on AI search visibility for your priority queries in between, so you catch meaningful shifts in how you're being represented before they compound into a larger visibility gap.

Who should actually run the audit

There's a reasonable case for running a first audit internally using low-cost tools, particularly for a smaller site with a fairly contained scope. Where we'd suggest bringing in outside expertise is in interpreting the results and prioritising fixes — it's one thing to generate a long list of technical issues and structural gaps, and quite another to know which three or four items on that list will actually move the needle first. An experienced auditor has usually seen the same pattern of issues across dozens of similar sites, which makes prioritisation considerably faster and more reliable than working through the list purely in the order it was generated.

Tools that support this checklist

A combination of tools typically covers this ground: Google Search Console for indexation and crawl data, a core web vitals checker for performance, a structured data testing tool for schema validation, and simply running your own priority queries manually through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google for the AI visibility section. No single tool covers the entire checklist end to end, which is part of why a systematic, section-by-section approach like this one is more reliable than relying on one all-in-one audit platform's default report.

What a good audit report actually looks like

A genuinely useful audit report doesn't just list problems — it groups them by priority and effort, explains the reasoning behind each recommendation in plain language, and gives you enough detail to either action the fixes yourself or brief a developer or writer clearly. A report that's simply a long spreadsheet of technical findings with no prioritisation or explanation puts all the interpretive work back on you, which somewhat defeats the purpose of commissioning an expert audit in the first place.

Measurement checklist

  • [ ] Priority pages indexed and crawlable
  • [ ] Core web vitals within acceptable range
  • [ ] Content matches dominant search intent
  • [ ] Entity details consistent across the web
  • [ ] Author attribution and expertise signals present
  • [ ] Answer-first structure across key pages
  • [ ] Strong internal linking and topical clusters
  • [ ] Valid schema implemented (Organization, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList)
  • [ ] Content genuinely deep and specific, not generic
  • [ ] Monthly manual tracking of AI search visibility in place

If your audit turns up gaps, our guides on what AI SEO is and AI SEO vs traditional SEO cover the reasoning behind each of these checks in more depth, and if you'd rather have this done for you, this exact checklist is the starting point for every engagement through our AI SEO agency. It's also worth reviewing whether your site's overall design and structure need attention — our AI website redesign guide covers when a deeper rebuild makes sense.
