Psychologist Marketing for Australian Private Practices

Psychologist marketing is harder than most agencies expect. You can’t publish client testimonials, you can’t promise outcomes, the word “specialist” carries legal weight, and the people searching for you are often anxious, time-poor and reading on a phone at 11pm.

AI Scale Business helps Australian psychology practices get found and booked through local SEO, AI search visibility, Google Ads and a website that turns visits into appointments. Everything we publish is written to sit inside the AHPRA advertising guidelines, because a campaign that breaks them is a liability, not a win.

The SEO strategy

The objective was not simply to increase traffic. The strategy focused on visibility for searches closely connected to the services people are actively looking for, including psychologists, ADHD assessments, fertility psychology, trauma support, anxiety therapy and location-based psychology services across the Gold Coast. That helped the website appear more often for both broad Gold Coast searches and specific service-led queries.

  • Strengthening core service-page optimisation
  • Targeting high-intent psychology keywords
  • Improving local Gold Coast relevance
  • Developing dedicated pages around specific services and locations
  • Improving internal SEO signals
  • Monitoring search performance to find further ranking opportunities
“Fabulous SEO! After some horrible experiences with other companies previously, I am so happy I have Clinton and his team on the SEO for my business. Would highly recommend if you want proper SEO that will get you visible and great results!”

The rules change the playbook

Why marketing a psychology practice is different

Most marketing playbooks are built for businesses that can lean on reviews, before-and-after results and bold claims. Psychologists can’t use any of those in the usual way.

AHPRA treats clinical reviews as testimonials, so a website widget that pulls in Google reviews mentioning anxiety improving or “fixing my marriage” can put the practice in breach. Penalties run up to $60,000 per offence for an individual and $120,000 for a body corporate (AHPRA advertising guidelines).

There are other constraints a general agency tends to miss

Titles

“Specialist” and “specialises in” are off-limits without specialist registration. Wording such as “substantial experience in” or “works with adults experiencing…” does the same job without the risk. Endorsement titles such as clinical psychologist should only appear for practitioners who hold that endorsement.

Privacy

An enquiry form on a psychology website collects health information, which is sensitive information under the Privacy Act. Ad pixels that pass page URLs or form data to advertising platforms need careful setup, or shouldn’t be there at all.

Ad targeting

Google restricts personalised advertising and remarketing based on health conditions, so a psychology campaign depends on search intent, not on following people around the internet.

None of this stops a practice marketing well. It changes what “well” looks like: clear information, accurate descriptions of who you help and how, and making it easy for the right person to book.

Who this is for

Our psychologist marketing work suits

The approach also works for counsellors, social workers and other allied mental health providers. Counselling isn’t regulated under the National Law, but Australian Consumer Law still applies, and we hold the copy to the same standard.

Solo private practitioners who rely on a handful of GP referrers and want a steadier, more predictable flow of enquiries.
Group practices that have associate psychologists with open diary time while the principal has a waitlist.
Practices adding a service line such as adult ADHD assessments, couples therapy, perinatal support or workplace/EAP work, that need that service to be found by the right people.
Telehealth and hybrid practices that can see clients beyond their suburb and want visibility across a state or nationally.
Multi-location clinics that need each location to rank locally without publishing near-identical pages.
What’s included

What our psychologist marketing includes

Each engagement is scoped after an audit, so not every practice needs every item below. These are the pieces we typically work on.

01

Local SEO and Google Business Profile

Most people search “psychologist near me” or “psychologist [suburb]” before anything else. We work on the signals that decide who appears in the map results: Google Business Profile categories, services, practitioner details, photos, opening hours and consistent practice details across directories. Review handling is part of this, with the caveat that you can’t solicit clinical testimonials and your replies must never confirm someone is a client.

02

Service and presentation pages that answer real questions

People rarely search “psychologist”. They search for what’s happening to them: panic attacks, burnout, grief, trouble sleeping, relationship conflict, an ADHD assessment for an adult. We build pages around the presentations and services you want more of, explaining who the service suits, what sessions involve, fees and Medicare rebates, telehealth options and how to book. Clinical content is drafted from your input and reviewed by you before it goes live. We write the page; you remain the authority on the clinical detail.

03

Visibility in AI search

More people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews to help them find support. Those answers draw on websites, directory listings and profiles that describe a practice clearly and consistently. We audit how your practice currently appears and fix the gaps.

04

Google Ads for psychologists

Search ads can fill an associate’s diary faster than SEO can. We run campaigns on high-intent searches only, write ad copy that stays within AHPRA rules, exclude searches that waste budget (student, career and “free counselling” queries, for example) and track enquiries without sending health data to Google.

05

A website that makes booking easy

A worried person on a phone will leave a slow or confusing site. We look at load speed, how quickly a visitor can see fees, rebate eligibility, availability and practitioner profiles, and how many steps it takes to book. If you use an online booking system, we make sure it’s connected and tracked.

06

Intake and follow-up automation

Enquiries that wait two days for a reply often book elsewhere. We can automate enquiry acknowledgements, intake form delivery, appointment reminders and waitlist messages using the practice management system you already have, with privacy settings reviewed first.

07

GP referrer marketing

For many practices, GPs remain the largest referral source. We help you build a simple GP-facing page with availability, areas of work, referral instructions and fees, plus an update email or letter you can send to local practices each quarter.

08

Reporting you can read in five minutes

Monthly reporting shows enquiries, bookings where your systems allow it, which channels produced them and what it cost. Tracking records that an enquiry happened, not what the person wrote.

We also review your existing website and ads against the guidelines during the audit, so you know what to change before anything new goes live.

Referral mix

Where new clients actually come from

A realistic plan balances several sources rather than betting on one.

GP referrals

Since 1 November 2025, Better Access referrals and mental health treatment plans are linked to the patient’s MyMedicare practice or usual medical practitioner. That makes relationships with nearby general practices more valuable, and it’s why GP-facing marketing sits in the plan. (GPMHSC)

Direct search

Self-referring clients, private-fee clients, telehealth clients and people searching for a specific service (assessments, couples work) usually start on Google.

Directories

Listings such as the APS Find a Psychologist service and Psychology Today can produce enquiries, especially early on. They’re worth keeping current, but you don’t control their rankings or layout.

AI answers

A growing share of people ask an AI assistant for options. The practices that appear are those with clear, consistent information across their website and listings.

For a practice with open diary time now, we usually start Google Ads alongside SEO and scale ads back as organic enquiries grow. For a practice with a waitlist, marketing is often better spent on intake automation, associate recruitment or filling specific services than on more enquiries overall.

Why AI Scale Business

Why practices work with AI Scale Business

Human-led strategy, AI-assisted execution

We use AI tools to speed up research, reporting and production. Strategy, clinical accuracy checks and compliance review stay with people.

Compliance built into the process

Every page and ad goes through an AHPRA advertising check before it goes to you for review. That doesn’t replace your own professional judgement, but it means you’re not the only safety net.

SEO, ads, website and automation in one place

Psychology practices often end up with a web designer, an ads freelancer and a booking system that don’t talk to each other. We handle the connected picture.

Australia-wide

We work with practices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and the Gold Coast, and with telehealth practices serving clients across states.

Pricing

What psychologist marketing costs

Book a 30-minute practice growth call

We’ll confirm which services fit your practice and what they would cost.

What changes the price

Number of locations and practitioners. A solo practice needs less work than a five-location group.
Channels. SEO only, or SEO plus managed Google Ads (ad spend is paid to Google separately).
Website condition. A sound site needs optimisation; a slow or outdated one may need rebuilding first.
Automation. Intake and reminder workflows are usually a one-off setup cost.
Honest fit check

When we’re not the right fit

  • If you want testimonial-heavy ads or outcome promises, we won’t write them.
  • If your practice is full with a long waitlist and no plans to add practitioners, more marketing won’t help much. Intake systems or a recruitment page might.
  • If you need a one-off website only, with no interest in ongoing visibility, a web designer may suit you better.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I show Google reviews on my website?

Reviews that mention clinical aspects, such as symptoms, diagnosis or treatment outcomes, count as testimonials under the AHPRA guidelines when you use them in your advertising, including on your own website. Reviews people leave on independent platforms that you don’t control are treated differently. The safer approach is linking to your Google profile rather than embedding reviews.

Do you write clinical content?

We draft it from information you provide, and you approve it before publication. We don’t present ourselves as clinicians, and we don’t publish clinical claims you haven’t signed off.

Can you guarantee rankings or a number of new clients?

No. Nobody can honestly guarantee Google rankings or AI search placement. We can show you what we’ll do, how we’ll measure it and what’s changed each month.

Do you work with counsellors and social workers?

Yes. The same approach applies, with Australian Consumer Law as the baseline where the National Law doesn’t.

Can you market a telehealth practice nationally?

Yes, within the limits of where you’re able to practise and take on clients. Telehealth pages need to be clear about eligibility, Medicare rebate conditions, fees and session formats.

How quickly will I see results?

Google Ads can bring enquiries within weeks. SEO usually takes several months to show meaningful change, depending on your website’s starting point and how competitive your area is.
