Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are becoming part of how Australian data centres get and manage power. In April 2026, Amazon signed nine PPAs in NSW and Victoria, eight of them solar-plus-storage. Quinbrook's Supernode in northern Brisbane, first announced as a data centre campus, began commercial operation of a 260 MW / 619 MWh battery in February 2026. New state rules push in the same direction: Victoria's September 2026 action plan requires new data centres to bring their own renewable supply and storage.
The Role of BESS in Data Centres
Batteries at or near data centres can do several jobs:
| Role | What it does |
|---|---|
| Resilience | Supplies critical load during grid events, alongside or partly replacing diesel runtime |
| Peak demand management | Reduces the peak drawn from the grid, which can lower network charges and the firm capacity a site needs |
| Renewable firming | Stores solar or wind output to match a data centre's constant load |
| Grid interaction | Provides frequency and other system services to the market when not needed on site |
| Speed to power | Reduces the firm grid capacity needed to start operating, which can help where connection capacity is limited |
| UPS integration | Large batteries can take on UPS bridging functions in some designs |
Key Infrastructure Requirements
- Sizing: power (MW) and energy (MWh) matched to the use case. Backup needs power and duration; firming needs energy
- Grid connection and protection: battery connections must meet network business requirements
- Grid-forming inverters: increasingly specified so batteries can support system strength and stability. pv magazine reports this trend for Australian hyperscale sites
- Fire safety and separation: lithium-ion battery fire engineering, spacing, and emergency response planning
- Controls: energy management systems that coordinate battery, grid, generators and UPS
- Market participation: registration and trading arrangements where batteries provide grid services
Australian Examples
| Project | Detail | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Quinbrook Supernode, northern Brisbane | Stage 1: 260 MW / 619 MWh; Stages 2 and 3 take it to 780 MW / 3,074 MWh; next to South Pine substation | Stage 1 operating (Feb 2026) |
| Amazon PPAs (NSW, VIC) | 8 of 9 PPAs include co-located batteries, e.g. Muswellbrook Solar Farm (94.5 MW solar + 70 MW battery), Forest Glen (72 MW + 72 MW) | Contracted Apr 2026 |
| Energy North off-grid hyperscale proposal | 1 GW data centre with about 16 GWh of battery storage, referred under the EPBC Act (Energy-Storage.news) | Environmental referral |
| Project Meridien, Kimberley | Wind, solar, batteries and gas for an AI campus | Early stage |
Policy Drivers
- AEMC (August 2026): recommendations include supporting co-location of generation and storage with large data centres, and requiring firming capacity contracts.
- Victoria (September 2026): new data centres must bring their own renewable supply and storage.
- Federal Expectations (March 2026): operators should support the energy transition without raising costs for others.

Australian BESS Suppliers
Directory listings for this category are being verified before they are published. Supply to data centre projects? Add your company to be considered.
| Type | Typical scope |
|---|---|
| Battery system integrators | Containerised BESS, inverters, EMS |
| EPC contractors | Civil, electrical and grid connection |
| Energy developers | Co-located solar/wind + storage offered through PPAs |
| Operations and trading | Market registration, dispatch optimisation |
Selecting a Supplier
- Experience connecting large batteries to Australian networks (NEM or WEM)
- Grid-forming capability where specified
- A fire safety case and separation design acceptable to the fire engineer and authority
- Performance guarantees on capacity, round-trip efficiency and degradation
- Ability to integrate with the data centre's generators, UPS and controls
Current Project Demand
Demand is growing on three fronts: storage bundled into renewable PPAs for data centre buyers, on-site storage to meet new state requirements, and storage used for speed to power where grid connections are constrained. See data centre power for the connection constraints behind this.
