This page tracks two things:
- Public tenders. Government approaches to market for data centre facilities, hosting and related infrastructure, published on AusTender, BuyICT and state procurement portals.
- Procurement signals. Public events on private projects that usually come before contracts are let, such as a planning approval, a construction start or a named head contractor.
This is not an official tender portal. We summarise and link to the original notice. Always read the buyer's documents and confirm dates and requirements with the buyer before you respond. Closing dates can change.
Most data centre construction work in Australia is procured privately. Developers appoint head contractors, and head contractors let subcontract packages without public advertisement. Watching project stages is therefore often more useful than watching tender portals.

How Data Centre Procurement Works
Government
Commonwealth agencies buy data centre facilities through the DTA's whole-of-government Data Centre Panel, which runs on the BuyICT platform. Hosting of sensitive and classified government data also requires a provider certified under the Hosting Certification Framework. See Canberra data centres for more on certification.
Larger government-linked projects may have Australian Industry Participation (AIP) plans, which set out how Australian suppliers can take part. The Department of Industry, Science and Resources publishes AIP plan summaries, including one for Data Centre Facilities 2, whole-of-government panel arrangements.
State portals to watch: NSW (buy.nsw), Victoria (Buying for Victoria), Queensland (QTenders), Western Australia (Tenders WA) and the ACT (Tenders ACT).
Private developers
- Pre-planning. The developer engages planning, environmental and engineering consultants.
- Design. Engineering consultants develop the design; long-lead equipment is often ordered at this stage.
- Head contractor selection. Usually by invited tender or negotiation. Developers with ongoing programmes often reuse builders. For example, FDC's IC3 Super West contract was its seventh project with Macquarie Data Centres.
- Subcontract packages. The head contractor tenders trade packages to its pre-qualified subcontractors.
- Commissioning and handover. Commissioning agents and testing specialists.
- Operation. The operator procures maintenance, FM and security services.
What buyers usually look for
Data centre buyers typically ask for evidence of mission-critical experience, safety systems and records, quality assurance, capacity to resource large programmes, and relevant certifications and licences. Government facilities may also need security-cleared personnel.
